St. John's Prairie Heart Institute performed the first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure in downstate Illinois on January 12. This revolutionary new procedure does not require traditional open heart surgery, but instead uses a catheter through an incision in the leg to replace the aortic valve. For this accomplishment Prairie Heart was featured in the April 2012 issue of Cath Lab Digest. Learn more about TAVR here.

Thomson Reuters named St. John's Prairie Heart Institute as one of the nation's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2011. This is the fourth time St. John's has been recognized with this honor. A Prairie Heart Institute physician implanted the first pacemaker safe to use with MRI. It has been estimated there is a 50 to 75 percent probability that cardiac device patients will need an MRI over the lifetime of their devices.

U.S. News and World Report named St. John's Prairie Heart Institute as one of the best regional hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery for 2011 and 2012.
