Center For Living
Welcome to the Healing Garden

Not all healing is the result of medicine or treatment. Sometimes, it comes from unexpected places. Prairie Heart Institute’s Healing Garden is such a place. The garden is a refuge for anyone seeking solace, quiet, reflection or comfort in difficult times. We invite you to use the garden whenever you find yourself in need of a quiet place while visiting St. John’s Hospital. The Healing Garden incorporates many symbols and elements that bring a sense of sacredness, meaning and beauty to the surroundings. Some special points of interest include...

The wooden finger labyrinth is an age-old method of praying and is a perfect metaphor for our journey through life. There are twists and turns in the intricate design, but there are no choices to make. There is one path to follow, leading to the center. Walking the labyrinth with your finger creates a space in which to temporarily silence our linear lives, clearing the way for creativity. Many say following a labyrinth is like going with the flow of life and trusting that you’re being divinely protected and guided the whole time.   Labyrinth

St. Francis   St. Francis is the Patron Saint of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis. He also is the Patron Saint of nature and ecology. Known for his love of the earth, stars, sun and moon, birds and other living creatures, he considered all of God’s creations part of his congregation. St. Francis reminds us of our interconnectedness to all of life and the sacredness found in nature.

Window into the Heart is the name of the sculpture skillfully created by artist Carol McKinney Brown. It gives visual meaning to philosopher Thomas Merton’s words, “There is in all visible things … a hidden wholeness.” While the heart is at the core of our existence, the health of the heart is dependent upon the ‘whole’ of our life journey. All that we do, think, feel and value contribute to the health of our heart and our sense of well-being.   Sculpture
