Self Defense
New!

Instructor(s):   Jim Sullivan, M.Ac., L.Ac., LMT, Certified Qi Gong Instructor

Location:   Healing Arts Studio

Description:   Personal empowerment is the goal of a good self-defense program, said Jim Sullivan, the instructor for a new Self Defense class at the Center for Living. Self-defense training can reduce fear and anxiety, increase confidence, and help conquer fears. “It’s not about ‘fighting,’” Sullivan said. “Self-defense training helps you develop courage to live your life.”The class is designed for both fitness and personal protection. Based on a progressive system of martial art, Natural Spirit International (NSI) techniques taught in the class are also used by U.S. Army Special Forces, Air Force special operations groups and police, as well as civilian security specialists. Emphasis is placed on making the style fit the student rather than fitting the person into the style. Personal size, strengths and limitations are taken into account. All students must be 14years or older to participate.
Topics covered include:
• Pre-conflict avoidance strategies
• Defense from street holds and chokes
• Ground survival • Surprise attack scenarios
• Simple yet highly effective striking techniques
• Edged weapons defense
• Post-conflict resolution
